These five lessons integrate the Middle Eastern American experience into the middle school History-Social Science and English Language Arts instructional programs. They can be taught as a unit or independently, in accordance to national and state standards. The unit incorporates primary sources to explore push-pull factors and Middle Eastern immigration to the U.S. (with a focus on the Arab American experience) from 1875-1925. The academic content and skills embedded and presented in this unit are central to understanding core themes and concepts, specifically industrialization, urbanization, assimilation, entrepreneurship, and citizenship. It also introduces the educator and learner to the memoir as a genre of literature and source of literary analysis and criticism.
